Our Work

Emerge. Grow. Lead.

The mission of the Center for Trauma and Leadership is to help leaders stay in their fields, love their jobs again, and lead through trauma with emotional intelligence and kindness.

The Center for Trauma and Leadership empowers leaders to transform workplaces into environments where people can heal and grow.

We partner with leaders and organizations that operate in a context of repeated trauma including first-responders, journalists, hospitals and mental health centers, nonprofits, and government agencies.

Our resources and learning programs help leaders and teams repair what has been hurt so organizations can fulfill their missions and bring their best work into the world.

“Research shows that good leadership is the greatest predictor of lower levels of PTSD and vicarious traumatization in professions where trauma is a routine part of the job.”

Gretchen Schmelzer, PhD

Trauma is a leadership issue

Historically, the workplace has not been considered an environment where people need to work with trauma. The subject of trauma is generally relegated to the domain of mental health — not in conversations with our leaders and teams.

But here’s the truth: adults spend most of their time at work and trauma is increasingly part of the workplace in the post-pandemic era. Trauma-informed awareness is becoming more common — which is important and necessary — but not sufficient for healing.

Our work at the Center for Trauma and Leadership begins where most trauma-informed training programs end, helping leaders and teams repair what has been hurt and build psychologically safe environments that promote healing and increase capacity and results.

“We want leaders to know they are capable of leading through the complexity their jobs demand, which requires developmental growth and learning how to engage with trauma in ways that are authentic to each individual.”

Carolyn Murphy, MA
